Sergeant Major (TX) Dewayne Naumann

Immediate Past President

A native Austinite, Dewayne attended John H. Reagan High School and Austin Community College. 

He began his military career in 2004 while working at the Texas General Land Office.  Influenced by the attack of September 11, 2001, he actively sought to join the US Army in defense of his country.   As things go, the age requirement kept him from service, however, COL Clarke Straghn, USMC, (Ret) a co-worker at the GLO made him aware of a way to serve his State and Nation by joining the Texas State Guard.

Upon enlistment in the TXSG, and attending basic training, Dewayne was assigned to HQ, Plans, Training and Operations (J-3) where his responsibilities related to disaster planning and preparation relative to the Mission of the TXSG.

Dewayne graduated the Air University’s USAF “Basic NCO Professionalism Course” at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX, in September 2005.  He also graduated the Air University’s USAF “Advanced NCO Professionalism Course” at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX, in September 2006.

After several promotions and awards, in July of 2009, Dewayne was appointed 1SG, for the HHC, Camp Mabry, Austin and served in that capacity until promotion to Sergeant Major in September of 2012 and being transferred to the Personnel and Administration Section (J-1).

Dewayne has served on activation during Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Dolly, Eduard, and Ike.  Additional activations include “Operation Wrangler”, a cooperative Federal, State and local law enforcement effort against crime and drug trafficking in and along the US and Mexico border.

Dewayne is a certified military instructor for “Basic” and continuing leadership soldier training.

Dewayne is also a Life Member of the National Guard Association of Texas (NGAT) and served on its Board of Directors from 2009 through 2013, and served as its Secretary/Treasurer from 2011 to 2013.

Dewayne was appointed the Fund Manager over the HQ Unit Fund and is responsible for overseeing and managing the financial affairs of the Headquarters.

Dewayne has received citations for Organizational Excellence, Texas Homeland Defense Medal, Outstanding Service Medal, Meritorious Service, Commanding General’s Individual Award with devise, Texas Humanitarian Service, Texas Medal of Merit, Texas Governor’s Unit Citation for Extraordinary Meritorious Conduct and Performance, many other recognitions.
